A non-profit organization, Achieve Tahoe leads the way in providing adaptive sports and outdoor recreation for people with disabilities and their families. Achieve Tahoe remains dedicated to the belief that sports are a vital part of the process in which individuals with disabilities build health, confidence, and independence. Its programs instill in participants the knowledge that it’s not their disabilities, but their abilities that count. Based at Palisades Tahoe at Alpine Meadows in North Lake Tahoe, CA, Achieve Tahoe serves over 700 individuals annually. A team of committed and experienced professionals lead over 200 active and dedicated volunteers.

 

About the Position

Under the direct supervision of Program Coordinators, the Adaptive Sports Instructor delivers safe and fun sports and outdoor recreation programs for people with disabilities.

 

Primary duties include:

  • Function as part of the Program Team to deliver Achieve Tahoe sports and recreation programs for people with disabilities.
  • Programs include archery, climbing, equestrian, hiking, and flat-water paddling.
  • For all programs, duties may include any of the following: assess and instruct participants; train, and supervise volunteers; use, maintain, store and transport equipment and vehicles.
  • Comply with and enforce all Achieve Tahoe policies.
  • Represent Achieve Tahoe in a positive and professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Program Coordinators.

 

Requirements for the Adaptive Sports Instructor include High School graduate, or equivalent; at least one year of experience delivering outdoor recreation to people with disabilities, or equivalent; and possess, or have the ability to acquire, a valid Driver’s License.

 

The ideal Adaptive Sports Instructor will have experience delivering a variety of adaptive sports and outdoor recreation programming to individuals with diverse backgrounds and abilities. The ideal Adaptive Sports Instructor will possess a college degree in a related field and certification in basic First Aid/CPR.

 

The ideal Adaptive Sports Instructor will have the knowledge, skills and ability to:

  • deliver outdoor recreation programs, and motivate volunteers and participants with disabilities engaged in these activities,
  • demonstrate general leadership techniques, understanding of disabilities, adaptive instructional techniques and equipment use, and the ability to teach same,
  • adhere to and enforce all company policies and procedures,
  • maintain current First Aid and CPR certification,
  • safely and repeatedly transfer students to and from adaptive equipment, or to instruct a volunteer in same,

 

The Adaptive Sports Instructor must have the ability to make presentations to groups and be able to engage with, gain the respect and cooperation of, and effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing, with both internal and external constituents such as community members, individual donors, sponsors, Board members, program participants and their families, staff, and volunteers. They must also have an outgoing personality with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a willingness and passion for teaching, excellent team skills, personal initiative and a strong work ethic are expected, yet the work environment is relaxed, friendly and fun.

 

Dates of Employment – This is a summer seasonal position available June through August 2024.

Weekly Work Schedule – 20-40 hours per week, depending on program needs and instructor availability. May include working Saturdays.

Compensation – Starting pay is $20 per hour.
